Meggson, based in Ede in the Netherlands, develops and manufactures machinery for the international egg industry, producing around 125 egg-handling machines annually. Fasteners such as bolts, nuts, screws and washers are used throughout the assembly of its machines, making regular replenishment an important part of the production workflow.
Head of Production Aart van Ginkel is responsible for managing this fastener stock. Meggson previously used a separate barcode scanner, but moved to FastScan in the Fabory app to create a simpler smartphone-based replenishment process.

The challenge: a scanner that did not fit the workflow
When Aart joined Meggson, the production department was using an Opticon barcode scanner to support fastener ordering. In practice, not every barcode could be scanned successfully and transferring scanned products into the shopping cart did not always run smoothly.
Meggson needed a simpler process that would make it easier to identify fasteners requiring replenishment and build the next order without relying on a separate handheld scanner.
The challenge was also one of visibility. Meggson had previously stored different fasteners together in a cabinet, making it difficult to see which items were being used most frequently or which needed replenishment.
The solution: FastScan in the Fabory app
Instead of replacing the separate scanner, Fabory introduced Aart to the FastScan function in the Fabory app. This allows him to use his smartphone to scan the barcode associated with an empty fastener bin.
Fabory printed the barcodes twice for each of Meggson's one hundred articles and attached them to the bins used within the two-bin system. This created a total of two hundred barcode labels and gave each managed article a clear place within the replenishment process.
When a bin becomes empty, Aart scans its barcode with his phone. The required article can then be added to the Fabory shopping cart ready for the next order.
How Meggson replenishes fasteners
1. Two bins per article
Fasteners are organised using two bins, giving Meggson a clear visual structure for each managed article.
2. One bin becomes empty
When the first bin is empty, the second bin remains available while the article is prepared for replenishment.
3. Scan with FastScan
Aart scans the barcode on the empty bin using the Fabory app on his smartphone.
4. Review and order
Scanned products are added to the Fabory shopping cart, where Aart can review and complete the order.
Better visibility of fastener replenishment
The two-bin structure makes it easier for Aart to see which articles require attention. When a bin is empty, its barcode becomes a clear replenishment signal rather than relying on someone to remember that the product needs ordering.
This provides Meggson with a more structured overview of routine fastener requirements and helps reduce the risk of an empty bin being overlooked when the next order is prepared.

From smartphone scanning to desktop ordering
FastScan does not require Aart to complete every stage of the process on his phone. After scanning the required barcodes, he sends the articles to the Fabory shopping cart and prefers to complete the order from his computer.
This gives Meggson a practical combination: fast barcode scanning beside the stock bins and a larger screen for reviewing the final order before it is submitted.
A simpler approach to regular fastener ordering
Aart typically places a new fastener order once a week, and sometimes more frequently. The combination of two-bin stock locations, barcode labels and FastScan gives Meggson a straightforward process for identifying and ordering the fasteners used in machine assembly.
Rather than automating inventory management completely, the solution keeps replenishment in Meggson's hands while making the process more structured and easier to manage using equipment Aart already carries with him.
