Drilling the correct anchor hole

Use the drill diameter and drilling method specified for the particular anchoring system. The required hole depth may be greater than the effective embedment depth and should not be estimated from the overall anchor length alone.

The drill should also be suitable for the base material. Worn or inappropriate drill bits can create holes outside the intended dimensions.

Where reinforcement, prestressing tendons or other embedded services may be present, the drilling location should be assessed before installation.

Cleaning the drill hole

Common anchor mounting methods

Anchors can be installed using different mounting arrangements depending on the fixture and application. Three common methods are pre-positioned fixing, through fixing and stand-off fixing.

Pre-positioned fixing

With pre-positioned fixing, traditionally referred to as attachment mounting, the anchor is installed in the base material before the fixture is positioned.

The fixture is then placed over the installed anchor and secured using the appropriate nut, washer, screw or other fastening component.

This method can be useful where the anchor itself does not need to pass through the component being fixed.

Through fixing

With through fixing, traditionally referred to as push-through mounting, the fixture is positioned first and the anchor is installed through the fixture into the base material.

This can simplify alignment because the fixture itself can be used to position the drill holes, particularly where several fixing points are required.

The selected anchor must be suitable for through installation and long enough to accommodate the fixture thickness while still achieving the required embedment depth.

Stand-off fixing

Stand-off fixing, traditionally referred to as spaced mounting, is used where the fixture must be positioned at a defined distance from the surface of the base material.

This type of connection may introduce additional bending or eccentric loading into the anchorage because the applied force acts away from the surface of the base material.

Mounting methods at a glance

Through fixing

Correct installation torque

Curing time for chemical anchors
